During this free one-day workshop, we'll dive into the magical world of Ruby.
This particular workshop requires that you've either done the original Rails Girls day, or have some prior programming experience. If not, you may like to join the - original Rails Girls event instead.
Applications are now closed.
You learn about Ruby, how the internet works, test driven development, and more.
You need your own laptop, curiosity, and a sprinkle of imagination!
Want to help? We have a few mentor positions still available. Email us at railsgirlsau at gmail dot com.
How much does the workshop cost? Nothing, it's free! You just need to be excited!
Who is this aimed at? Rails Girls Next is open to all those who identify as women or girls, and who have already done the original Rails Girls workshop (or have some prior programming experience). We’ve had people of all ages taking part.
Can men attend? Yes, but women and girls are given priority.
Do you have a code of conduct? Yes, it is on the ruby.org.au website. We expect attendees, coaches, and sponsor representatives to behave respectfully to make sure everyone has a great time.
Will there be coffee? Hells yeah.
The day will consist of 3 self-contained workshops. Each will focus on a different aspect of Ruby / Web development.

WelcomeOutline of the day - since you have Ruby installed already, we can jump right into it. |
10:00 - 12:00 |
1. Web Fundamentals WorkshopTo give you a better understanding of how the web works, you’ll build a simple 'Coffee Cost Calculator' website using Sinatra. It will be more hands on than your original Rails Girls site, so be ready to write some code! |
12:00 - 13:00 |
LunchDelicious food, generously provided by RubyConf. |
13:00 - 15:00 |
2. Test Driven Development WorkshopLearn a new way to code (and avoid errors!) by writing tests as you go. You'll use pair programing and Test Driven Development (TDD) to convert numbers to Roman Numerals. |
15:00 - 15:00 |
3. Build a Ruby ATMFocus on your Ruby skills - level 2! You'll write a function to emulate an ATM, where users can request an amount, and receive back a collection of notes. There'll be no copy/paste solutions - you'll be in the drivers seat and will be using your own problem solving ability to write original code. |
17:00 - 17:30 |
Retrospectives and Wrap-upWe'll find out what worked well, and also how we can make it even better in future. We'll also let you know how to stay in touch with the Ruby community, and continue your programming journey. |
After the eventRubyConf welcomes all Rails Girls attendees to the Wednesday Night opening party at Trunk Bar and Restaurant, and the Saturday closing picnic at Flagstaff Gardens. Both events are free to attend - we’ll send you a registration link once your workshop attendance is confirmed. |
